The boat comes with a trailer and 1949-1952 (Serial #350385 so it is that year range based on our research) vintage Mercury KF5 Super5 5HP outboard motor. This original vintage 1937 Thompson Bro's wooden cedar strip row boat was fully restored by our late father Robert (Bob) Kraemer in May 1986. Price includes one pair of original Peterborough spoon blade oars with new leathers and oarlocks. While not pristine, this is still a valuable boat. There are a few bangs, bruises, dark spots, and the seats have a few scratches from my dogs. The rear seat backrest was made from Peterborough Speedster backrests. A new and proper (concave back) half oval brass stemband and bow eye have been installed. The exterior has been freshened with 6 coats of Epifanes clear gloss varnish. In the past year, the keel and skeg were removed and re-bedded. While I have thoroughly enjoyed rowing it in Swell Bay of Rainy Lake, it is now time to let it go for a new owner to appreciate. I put a lot of time, effort, and expense into making the missing parts (white oak), procuring hardware, and putting the boat back together. The hull was safe, but some of the parts were destroyed. The previous owner was in the midst of restoring it, when a fire swept through his shop. Peterborough built very few boats using this construction technique. It is is very solid and the Flathead V8 engine runs like new. This unique classic draws attention where ever it goes. A travel/dust cover and two classic wood paddles included. The carburator has received a new carb kit along with new adjustable jets, and the raw water pump and cooling system has been cleaned and adjustments made to offset the traditional hotter running ford flatheads. Trailer wheel bearings have been checked and repacked. The trailer has been professionally gone thru with new wiring and lights. The boat comes with a custom high quality trailer (18' 6") which allows the Classic to be stored in most standard garages for easy storage and access. ![]() This beautiful example of a classic was stored in an environmentally controlled storage facility for over a decade, and was bought from an estate, brought to Colorado, gone thru and freshened and tuned. Design by Custom Craft and privately built in 1991, the boat and motor have less than 45 hrs on the meter. Also, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy ordered a Hydrodyne in 1963 for her family to use in their Cape Cod summer home.Ĭlassic 1960 16' Design Woodie Runabout, with a NoSoak Fiberglass bottom, and powered by a refurbished classic 1940 Ford Flathead V8 Mini, 60 hp. ![]() In fact, his quality reputation caused most of the original Mercury 7 astronauts to choose his boats for their personal use. Abner Crosby, the company's founder sold out to Archer-Daniels-Midland in 1958 and went on to found the Hydrodyne Boat Company which produced similar boats. Additionally the could bend to conform to hull contours, and had great shock absorbing and sound deadening properties. The 2 cubic feet of balsa cut into 1 inch square by 6 ft strips added a conservative 105 lbs of additional buoyancy which was twice a buoyant as cork. What set Crosby apart from its competitors was the incorporation of strips of balsa wood laminated between two fiberglass floor layers. A fiberglass interior appeared in 1958 and later models. The wood interior of the Crosby also aided in providing additional flotation through the 1957 model year. In fact this late 1957 model sports a 3 cubic foot air chamber under the front deck which added 200 lbs of additional buoyancy. Further, it would not float when swamped so sealed air chambers had to be designed into the hull and/or styrofoam blocks fastened to the seat bottoms as an early solution. While fiberglass was strong, it was also very heavy when layered to achieve the required level of strength. Widespread acceptance by the boating community was not gained, however until the mid 1950s when companies began to standardize construction methods. At the time, this synthetic (fiberglass) was relatively new and untested, although fiberglass boat models had made their appearance as early as 1950. This company was one of the early pioneers in the use of this new and controversial construction material.
